PORTUGAL is a country in the Southwestern Europe, located on the occidental part of the Iberian Peninsula. The capital is Lisbon and the official language Portuguese.

Portugal became an independent kingdom in 1143, being the first European nation to fix its final frontiers. This country has a significant role in the universal history during the Age of Discovery. It spearheaded the exploration of the world. This nation set up the first contact with the Orient by the sea routs, discovered Brazil and had many colonial possessions in Africa.

This nation fought hardly against slaving and it was one of the pioneers in the definitive abolition of it.

Although Portugal didn't have an active participation in the Second World War, it had an important role saving thousands of lives once it allowed the Jewish escape.

Nowadays this country is economically balanced, political and socially stable and human developed. It is a member of the European Union since 1986 and its currency the Euro.

The climate is very mild, with hot summers and soft winters, this can explain the huge development of beach holiday and golf tourism (mainly in the Algarve). However, the guests interested in cultural or environmental holidays will have a lot to choose all over the country.

Portuguese people are known to be extremely welcoming and friendly.
