Only two hours away from Zürich on train, Lucerne takes away your breath with a marvelous landscape painted by the shores of the river Ruess just before uniting with lake Lucerne with the horizon cut down by the mountains. Lucerne is easily accessible by train - Swiss trains are modern, cheap and reliable. Nevertheless we don't recommend buying train tickets on vending machines as most of them are in German and the few that have an English don't guide you to the option of buying a day ticket (about 24CFH if memory doesn't fail). These day tickets allow unlimited rides from 9am. The best option is to personally buy a ticket. The station's staff is kind and speaks fluent English. For information regarding prices and schedules please consult this site . Lucerne is a very beautiful city and should be seen on foot, doing it any other way will make it lose all it's charm. You should be careful about mosquitoes when walking on the shores of the Ruess (even on September) - the black dots appearing on the photo to your right weren't caused by a dirty car window, they are mosquitoes flying around. For your convenience, We've attached a map with an on foot itinerary between the principal attractions. Even if not marked on the map a walk between St. Peter's Church ( St. PeterSkapelle) and Spreuer bridge (SpreuerBrucke) is mandatory.
